She hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then she realised there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

They wouldn't let it lie · 24 June 06

Boy did she need this vacation.

The lead up to it had been stressful, sure. There was always the 101 little things that suddenly rear their heads and need to be sorted out then and there, that won’t wait any longer. Sometimes even driving her to question whether it was worth going at all. But all such doubts melted away when she stepped out the door, confirmed she had the only things she really couldn’t do without, her passport and a credit card, and climbed into her friend Anna’s car. Finally she could sit back, relax, and let the precious few days of upcoming freedom take over.

Now she could smile ruefully at the stress of the last few days. Of course, there wouldn’t be any such problem if only she didn’t put things off to the last minute anyway. A quick mental flick through the list of things that had to be done, and she was finally able to cast them out of her mind. Enjoy a moment of pure mindlessness indeed. A rare commodity to be sure.

Anna looked over at her and smiled, but didn’t say anything to interrupt her reverie. They had been doing this together for years, going on this little escape all their own, and Anna knew how valuable this moment of peace was. They had several days ahead of them, after all, to talk about anything and everything. Not to mention, and this thought brought a little crease between her eyes, the faintest of clouds, getting to the root of what was really going on with Susan.

To look at her you wouldn’t think anything at all. You had to know her really really well to detect any change. More than that you had to be paying very close attention. The most overt signs were the increased recklessness and fatalism, traits she had in plenty for sure, but sometimes they seemed to be just that little bit more overriding. Other clues were scarce indeed, near incomprehensible when dropped, the conversation quickly turned. But Anna and Harriet, Susan’s old roommate, had been comparing notes, and they were almost certain something was wrong.

But then Anna shook her head to clear out the clouds. Not for anything would she interrupt this moment of peace. Although she sensed a need to explore the strength of the bonds that were holding Susan to this world, the need wasn’t urgent; they’d hold for a good while yet.

  1. Hey beautiful…long time no chat. Glad to see the blog is fixed. :D

This post is a bit strange. Feels like we’re coming in to the middle of something and missing the rest.
