She hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then she realised there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

Keeping those tigers at bay · 21 May 06

My grip slips, a little
Rules, there are all these rules
And I cannot see where they come from

Reason makes no sense
There seems no foundation underneath it
Acceptance fights with instinct
Loses its way

The things we take for granted
They are like a leash to hold us
Keep the animal at bay

Why though? I keep asking
A machine so bizarre we keep feeding
Whatever point just an illusion
The darkness veiled

To keep the tiger beyond the campfire
A mesh of rules, reason and logic
Safer to be subject than to ask

To find one’s place and keep on coping
So society keeps revolving
Do not ask too many questions
Look away

  2. First 3 lines are the ones which did it for me. On some level you do have to think about the other verses, but the first one just shoots you, no thinking, no conjecture. Loved it. Plus there’s a voice to it. The later verses are good, but they’re paper poetry. The first one has a voice, makes it SO powerful. Well, to me anyway.
