Life in a small town · 7 March 06
The day the storks came seemed to start just like any other day. Except for the storks of course; you couldn’t really describe the sighting of storks as an ordinary occurrence in small town Virginia. But apart from that, there was really nothing special to mark the start of this day. Of course, as we all know, literature, or at least the dramatic branches of that artform, is positively inundated with ordinary-seeming days that turn into something really quite spectacular. The savvy reader may have already identified signs that this is one of those situations. What is coming they might wonder? Was it an ominous sight, the unexpected arrival of these far from native birds? Did it perhaps herald an influx of babies, the more lateral-minded might wonder. And so, since I couldn’t really say that I am fond of an unhealthy or overly stressful state of suspense, I will tell you what happened. You see, it really was exactly that. That day a flock of storks flew in, took up residence, decided that they owned a little corner of this otherwise really quite average small town. That’s all, you say? But then, that really is quite enough excitement for one day, don’t you think?
The best of christmas Am I the only sucker on this continent?
storks are also so iconograpic, and have been a part of our mythopoeic consciousness for millennia, so naturally we look inward to some collective memory perhaps on what the omen/portent will mean.
you led us up this path holding our hand, and at the top of the hill, we find ourselves alone, thinking
