The best of christmas · 30 December 05
In honour of all those delightful people in their consumer comas who just can’t bear the thought that this isn’t the peachiest, happiest time of year for everyone around them, I thought I would pay homage to the people who gave me the best, most thoughtful Christmas presents.
First place doesn’t go to me this year, though there were some good runners up in contention – noone’s taste is quite as impeccable as your own, of course ;) Instead, top prize goes to my adorable cousin Caitlin – of course I only dare write that full in the knowledge that she’ll never ever see my blog. No 16 year old likes to be thought of as adorable and I’m pretty sure she’d object even more than most. However, I was incredibly moved by the fact that she, entirely spontaneously and of her own volition, wrote me a letter and made me an origami decision maker. (The suspicion that she had exams or something to revise for only very briefly flitted through my mind.) I’m sure such gems as ‘If you really need to use this to make up your mind, you truly are beyond help’ will stand me in good stead as I enter what I am sincerely hoping will be a much less unsettling rollercoaster of a year.
Second place goes to my friend Erin’s mother. Firstly, for very kindly adopting me over Christmas, and humouring all of my dietary whims (a broken jaw, it seems, is for life not just for Christmas). In addition, she supplied me with a selection of soap and candles that will last me for the rest of the year, if not for life. Nonetheless, pride of place goes to a packet of Earl Grey teabags. Yes, I know I can buy that for myself, but you only get pretty nasty stuff in the supermarket, and that would be to detract from the incredibly considerate sensitivity – she’s only met me once before and she’s already identified this craving of mine!
Finally, honourable mention goes to my lovely new suede boots, which I’ve almost decided that I’m definitely going to keep, as well as my cute new handbag (purse). I’m sure I’ll get up the courage to wear the boots once the excuse of all that snow and ice is gone. Actually choosing to buy myself a handbag is an acknowledgement of the fact that, at least some of the time, I have become a person who carries one. My progression into adulthood continues almost seamlessly, it would seem…
Keep the boots, it doesn’t snow down in VA that much, and will snow less now that I’m back up in New England. :D
Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year to you and all your blog readers.
