So most of the time I continue blithely through my working life, assuming that I am not receiving unfair treatment because I am a woman… To be fair, most of the time I don’t – though I know that I am being paid less than I should be, but I tend to think that is a lack of forcefulness on my part rather than because I’m a woman. Although of course, if you delve deeply enough into that then they become pretty much the same thing…
I am not so naive as to think that there is no imbalance, although I do believe that it is being watered down as my generation and the ones just around it pass up through the workforce. But then every now and then something stops me short – pulls me up so to speak. Today I received this email – a circular not even targetted to me, but still!! I was shocked and horrified – a throw away phrase, but how archaic and inappropriate, whether intended as humour or not:
“Dear Collegues,
As you know we have the *** Symposium coming up … at the Ritz Carlton in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia (this is by the way a beautiful site with a wonderful mall attached to the hotel – for the wives). We have extra spaces for attendees in academia which have been funded by several pharmaceutical grants. ”
I want to go and berate somebody, report this, go to a higher authority and tell them this is not right and they must do something about it. But the source is not even in my organisation, let alone within my ken…
